Crawling Stayman  - A special treatment of the traditional Stayman, useful when the responder holds 0-7 points with at least 4 cards in the major suits and a short Diamond suit.  Responder begins with a traditional 2C Stayman bid and passes if opener bids 2H or 2S.  If opener bids 2D, responder bids 2H.  Opener is required to either pass with 3+ Hearts or correct to 2S holding 3+ Spades; exceptionally, holding 2=2 in the majors, opener may bid 2N, asking responder to signoff in 3C.

North opens 1 Notrump.  Based on South's 4=5=2=2 holding, typically the best contract will be 2H or 2S.  Using the Crawling Stayman convention, South responds with a normal 2C Stayman bid.  North responds 2H with 3 Hearts which Responder Passes with a good fit.  If North held a 4=2=4=3, after South's 2H rebid Opener would bid 2S and responder would Pass.
