Lightner
Double - A Double of opponents' high level auction, often a slam bid, to
request partner to make an unusual lead. The Lightner Double was named
after Theodore Lightner in 1929. The following guidelines apply to
Lightner Doubles:

Typically anticipates the
player making the Lightner Double can generate the setting trick by
either ruffing the lead of a long side suit, or allowing partnership to
quickly take their winning tricks before the Declarer sets up a long
side suit to pitch losers. |

Excludes the normal lead of
the suit bid by the defenders |
3. |
Excludes the lead of a
trump |
4. |
May exclude the lead of a
natural suit bid by defenders - leader must deduce situation based on
holdings and aggregate bidding |
5. |
Often means the lead of
Dummy's first bid suit, depending on partnership agreements |
6. |
May mean the lead of a
Spade (or highest suit not bid by opponents), depending on partnership
agreements |
